The Foot Soldier

By Mark Rubinstein / Genre: War / Rating: 5.0 out of 5 stars (44 reviews)

The Foot Soldier

Right after college graduation, Costa, a lower-middle-class kid from Buffalo, New York, is drafted into the US army and plunged into the Vietnam War. The Foot Solder catapults the reader back to the conflict that changed America.

This is a compelling novella of morality—right or wrong in a split second in the hell of the jungle—when it really matters, regardless of rank, military orders, or rule books. It asks how a soldier survives, how he deals with dislocation, and how he reacts when given an order that defies everything he’s ever believed about the human soul.

Ragnarok Rising: The Awakening (Book One of The Ragnarok Rising Saga)

Everyone you know is dead.

Reports of mob violence begin to appear in the news as more and more major cities go silent. Rumors fly about the nature of the “rioters”, claiming that the dead have risen to prey on the living. In the Midwest City of Springfield Missouri, all Law Enforcement Officers are called out for field duty. Nothing in their training could possibly prepare them for what they faced.

Corrections Officer Wylie Grant is sent into the field to help set-up a checkpoint in a remote section of the county. When they confront the rioters, they discover for themselves that they are facing the living dead. Wylie and National Guard Corporal Chrissy Wilder are the only ones to survive the encounter. Alone and cut off, they must fight their way back to the Nathanael County Jail where the few remaining officers are attempting to regroup.

Finding himself leading the rescue efforts, Wylie must choose between his sworn duty as an officer and his own duty to his family. While coping with the loss of friends and family members, they learn that a government “containment protocol” will soon be in effect. Once established, no one will be allowed in or out of the city.

Facing the realization that no one is coming for them, they must face the harsh truth that the government they thought was their ally has become yet another enemy in a world gone mad.

Can Wylie reach his family in time?

Little Black Sheep: A Memoir

By Ashley Cleveland / Genre: Christian Living, Religion & Spirituality / Rating: 4.9 out of 5 stars (43 reviews)

Little Black Sheep: A Memoir

“This is the story of the groundwork that paved the way to my faith. It is not an easy story to tell….” This powerful memoir from Grammy Award winner Ashley Cleveland reminds us that even in the lowest times of our lives, beauty can shine through.  As a young woman from a deeply flawed family, Ashley had little hope she would amount to anything. If there was trouble, near or far, she found it. Yet, in her destructive days of drugs, alcohol, and sex, she encountered a forgiving God who was relentlessly faithful. Change did not come quickly. The brokenness did not disappear. But little by little, Ashley allowed God to heal her, to transform her desires, to bring courage to others through her journey. Little by little, she saw that it was her brokenness itself that God wanted to use. This beautifully told story will take you from the back rooms of Nashville to the churches of the San Francisco Bay area to a tender new life where one woman discovers that God can work in broken places.

Hocus Pocus (Kurt Vonnegut Series)

By Kurt Vonnegut / Genre: Classics, Literary Fiction / Rating: 4.1 out of 5 stars (83 reviews)

Hocus Pocus (Kurt Vonnegut Series)

Eugene Debs Hartke (named after the famous early 20th century Socialist working class leader) describes an odyssey from college professor to prison inmate to prison warden back again to prisoner in another of Vonnegut’s bitter satirical explorations of how and where (and why) the American dream begins to die. Employing his characteristic narrative device–a retrospective diary in which the protagonist retraces his life at its end, a desperate and disconnected series of events here in Hocus Pocus show Vonnegut with his mask off and his rhetorical devices unshielded.

Debs (and Vonnegut) see academia just as imprisoning as the corrupt penal system and they regard politics as the furnishing and marketing of lies. Debs, already disillusioned by circumstance, quickly tracks his way toward resignation and then fury. As warden and prisoner, Debs (and the reader) come to understand that the roles are interchangeable; as a professor jailed for “”radical”” statements in the classroom reported by a reactionary student, he comes to see the folly of all regulation. The “”hocus pocus”” of the novel’s title does not describe only the jolting reversals and seemingly motiveless circumstance which attend Debs’ disillusion and suffering, but also describe the political, social, and economic system of a country built upon can’t, and upon the franchising of lies.

At 68, Vonnegut had not only abandoned the sentiment and cracked optimism manifest in Slaughterhouse-Five, he had abandoned any belief in the system or faith for its recovery. This novel is another in a long series of farewells to the farmland funeral rites of childhood.

Castigo Cay

By Matthew Bracken / Genre: Thriller, Mystery & Thrillers, Action & Adventure / Rating: 4.4 out of 5 stars (176 reviews)

Castigo Cay

Dan Kilmer is a former Marine sniper in his early thirties. He returned home from military service in the Middle East and gave college a try, but his combat experiences prevented him from fitting into campus life. In a South Florida boatyard, his uncle was attempting to refurbish an old cargo schooner, and Dan left college to help him finish the flagging project. After two years of work but before the sixty-foot boat was relaunched, his uncle fell from a scaffold and died. While still in his twenties, Dan inherited the schooner Rebel Yell. Soon after, he left the United States to embark on a series of voyages, mostly in pursuit of beautiful women and good times. While he was away from America, new federal taxes were imposed on luxury property, including privately owned yachts. Dan cannot pay these or other new taxes, so he can’t return to the States without risking confiscation of his schooner. Instead he must always fly under official radar and earn a living by his wits while staying one step ahead of the IRS and other government agencies. He must navigate the reefs of government control while always searching for a way to make money without the permission of the local authorities. This usually requires some type of shady dealing, subterfuge, and stealing from thieves as Dan moves from port to port. A shifting cast of crew members inhabits Rebel Yell, but the novel is about Dan Kilmer and his quest to live as a free man in an increasingly unfree world.

The Stone of David

The descendants of Abraham, Jews, Muslims and Christians have been locked in battle for millennia, marring the earth and the face of humanity with one destructive skirmish and war after another. However, the conflicts that make the news are merely eruptions of evidence from a deeper and more sinister war that has raged uninterrupted and mostly underground since the beginning of time. Radical, super-secretive and sometimes seemingly supernatural groups of those bent on global domination have manipulated the world’s population to the brink of annihilation on more than one occasion. If not for the counterbalance of an equally secretive and powerful force of peace known simply as “The 12” they may well have succeeded by now.

At the heart of some of the the world’s oldest secrets “The Stone of David” holds the key to a body of knowledge with the power to unravel the tidy facade of global stability and provide ultimate power to the possessor. An unusual alliance of old enemies has carved a new facet into this landscape of power struggles and forces Laura Wells, a former CIA agent and her husband Alexander, one of “The 12” out of seclusion and into full conflict with those bent on igniting the tenth Crusade and WWIII.

Through new alliances, uncovered secrets between them, and the use of an array of stunning technology, Laura and Alexander take the fight to the heart of this global meltdown and to the most furiously contested patch of earth that is Jerusalem.

12.21.12: The Vessel (The Altunai Annals)

The only way to save the future is to decode the past. The only way to decode the past is to save the future.

Archaeologist Sheppard Smyth has staked his career and the honorable memory of his wife and partner on proving his widely panned theory: Cleopatra VII, the last sovereign pharaoh of Egypt, was not a victim of suicide as history suggests, but of a well-concealed murder. When a statue of the doomed Queen is unearthed in a pre-Columbian excavation site in Mexico, Shep rushes to investigate and, hopefully, find the proof that has evaded him for so long. The statue, however, is only the first clue suggesting a mysterious connection between Mesopotamia and Mesoamerica, and possibly – beyond. Suddenly thrust into the heated rivalry between sexy and enigmatic antiquities thief Victoria Kent and the infamous Russian mafioso Dmitri Kronastia, Shep finds himself a common pawn played by forces working to see out a quest older than the pyramids and cloaked in the Mayan Doomsday prophecy of 12.21.12.
