Second-Chance Mother: A Memoir
By Denise Roessle / Genre: Memoirs, Biographies & Memoirs / Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars (55 reviews)
When Denise Roessle became a mother at 45, her long-held dream came true. She felt as if she were 19 again, the age at which she got pregnant out of wedlock and relinquished her newborn son for adoption. Suddenly, he was back — this stranger she had given birth to — and he wasn’t just searching for his roots. Joshua was looking for a mom. Eager to embrace the second chance she had been granted, Denise leapt wholeheartedly into the role.
“It’s a BIG boy,” she announced to her family and friends, setting free her twenty-six-year secret. But Joshua was not a boy. He was a grown man, with a history that fell far short of what she had envisioned for him when she’d been assured he would be “better off” without her. His adoptive parents had essentially given up on him at age thirteen, sending him away with only an eighth-grade education. He drifted through a series of institutions and group homes, and ultimately onto the New York City streets, where he fell into drugs and crime. When an early marriage failed, he and his young wife surrendered an infant and toddler to adoption. By the time Denise and her son reunited, he was in his second marriage to a teenaged runaway who was six months pregnant with their first child. Despite her disappointment and his obvious problems, Denise was determined to restore their severed bond and give him the unconditional love that had been lacking in her own childhood.

Hanna’s Quick & Easy Vegan Cookbook
By Hanna Getty / Genre: Healthy, Special Diet, Cookbooks / Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars (16 reviews)
She has done it once again! Hanna Getty, the extraordinarily prolific and expert in the vegan culinary arts, has just published yet one more plant-based cookery book that consists of an impressive compilation of fifty quick and easy vegan recipes, and she called it very appropriately, Hanna’s Quick & Easy Vegan Cookbook.
In Ms. Getty’s own words, “ … because they require less than an hour of actual work, all my recipes are quick and easy.” And this by no means an exaggeration. I tried most of the recipes in this book myself and none of them tied me up in the kitchen for more than 60 minutes with a great majority of them requiring far less time than that. Furthermore, every single one of Ms. Getty’s recipes is accompanied by a precise list of ingredients plus a comprehensive list of all the kitchen equipment that will be needed to prepare the specific dish in question. Users will never have a need for guessing, assuming or surmising. Then her step-by-step instructions are so easy to follow that anyone who can read will be able to prepare the most lip smacking foods with little to no effort. Lastly, Ms. Getty has included full color pictures with every recipe in order to show all of us who are visually inclined how each specific dish will look like once it is finished and ready to serve.
As is true for all her work, Hanna Getty is very good about arranging and organizing her books into chapters and sections that make absolute sense. This one, Hanna’s Quick & Easy Vegan Cookbook, is no different.
