“But that useless organ was finally closed down. But let me get back to the story. During the American Civil War and the years after its end, thousands of Confederate sympathizers and former soldiers left the southern United States to go into exile in other counties. Evidence suggests that more Confederate soldiers went to British Honduras, presently known as Belize, than any other single site.”
“Why was that sir?”
“The weather, the lack of government control, the fact that they spoke English as a primary language and not many people knew what or where British Honduras was. If the Federal Government wanted to take reprisals against former officers and politicians they couldn’t find them in a place like that.
“Not only that but I would venture them folks know how to cook up a rack of ribs. Not to mention a pot of pinto beans.
